The short answer
A sliding gate is the better choice when there is no room for the leaves to swing or the entrance is on a slope. A swing gate is simpler and often the natural choice for a narrower entrance with enough room in front and behind. The final decision comes from measuring on site.
Comparison on the points that matter
| Point | Sliding gate | Swing gate |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Needs free space along the fence beside the opening | Needs room in front of or behind the gate for the leaves to swing |
| Ground | Copes better with a slope, but needs a level track and a foundation for the guide | A slope makes opening harder, so leaves often need a larger clearance |
| Automation | The drive is mounted beside the gate, on a rack | The drive is mounted on the post and the leaf, with one or two motors |
| Wind | Less sensitive to wind | Large leaves catch the wind and need a stronger structure |
| Upkeep | The guide and wheels are cleaned and lubricated now and then | Hinges are lubricated and leaf alignment checked now and then |
Questions to answer before ordering
- How wide is the opening and how much free space is there beside it?
- Is the ground level or does it slope towards the street or the yard?
- Should the gate have automation and a remote?
- Is a pedestrian gate needed beside it?
- What infill do you want: slats, sheet or a laser-cut pattern?
Once you send the dimensions of the opening and a photo of the spot, we can suggest the type of gate and how to install it. If needed, we come to look on site.
